How does the sound from a wind turbine compare to other sounds in our immediate environment?

All 35 existing utility-scale wind turbines now operating in Wisconsin are subject to maximum permitted noise levels set forth in the conditional use permits issed by the local townships. At 1,000 ft. distance from the wind turbine, the sound threshold of Wisconsin wind machines is required to not exceed 50 decibels. The MGE wind machines in Kewaunee County have easily tested out less than 50 decibels at a 1,000 ft. distance.

Sound level comparison: Here are the real-world equivalents of various decibel levels.

Note: The following chart is based on a Wisconsin State Journal article which included noise level analysis prepared as part of an environmental impact statement for the new runway at the Dane County Regional Airport.
