Wisconsin does not have any fossil fuel resources, but we have plenty of sun and wind. Why are we spending billions of dollars every year to import coal, oil, and natural gas? Wisconsin can take charge of its energy future to ensure that families, businesses, and communities are free from the instability and volatility of oil and coal. A smart Wisconsin invests in clean energy made in Wisconsin.

Most of Wisconsin’s electricity is generated from coal and natural gas, but Wisconsin has no coal and natural gas reserves. Wisconsin imports coal, primarily from Wyoming, and natural gas from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, and Canada. Transitioning to renewable energy sources would keep energy dollars in-state and promote investment in Wisconsin’s economy.

Wisconsin also lacks crude oil resources and no operating refineries. Advancing electric transportation alongside increasing homegrown, clean energy on our electric grid can reduce reliance on imported oil. Electric vehicles require minimal maintenance, and charging cars with electricity is cheaper than gas, benefitting Wisconsin household budgets. We can break our addiction to imported oil and fuel our vehicles using energy from the sun and wind.

In 2019, Governor Evers set a goal that all electricity consumed in the state will be 100% carbon-free by 2050. Currently, renewable energy only accounts for 13% of all electricity sold in Wisconsin. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Wisconsin consumes almost six times as much energy as it produces, and spends billions on coal, oil, and natural gas every year. A smart, carbon-free energy transition keeps more money in-state by investing in renewable energy. State and federal investments are moving us toward our clean energy goals, but we need to maximize the benefits of this energy transition for Wisconsin residents.

Let’s build a chorus of voices to amplify Wisconsin’s clean energy opportunities. We will need an “all of the above” and “all hands on deck” approach to shape our clean energy future. An investment in homegrown renewable energy and clean transportation is an investment in a stronger, smarter Wisconsin.
